Mammography is an important tool for the early detection of breast cancer. 2D digital mammography is the standard screening method, while 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) provides detailed images of breast tissue and can reduce false-positive results. Film-screen mammography is an older technique that has largely been replaced by digital imaging.
Other imaging methods include whole-breast ultrasound, which uses sound waves and is useful for evaluating breast lumps and selected women with dense breasts, and breast MRI, which is particularly valuable for women at high risk of breast cancer.
Mammography remains the cornerstone of breast cancer screening. Ultrasound and MRI provide additional information in selected patients based on their breast density, symptoms, family history, and individual risk.
